FRWL in Braunschweig – A Night to Remember with Nikki van der Zyl

What you see above, is the german title of “From Russia with Love” and for the 50th anniversary of the films release, Bond connoisseur Danny Morgenstern invited Bond- and Cinemafans alike to an exciting evening in the C1 Cinema in Braunschweig, Germany.
But not just seeing this classic Bond thriller, the most realistic of them all, was the center of attention. Danny had managed to fly in a special guest from London: Nikki van der Zyl, the voice of many Bond Girls from “Dr. No” to “Moonraker”.

As with the screening of “Dr. No” in the previous year, the arriving guests had the pleasure to walk the red carpet into the cinema – a touch of film glamour since ticket holders were asked to wear evening attire. It was a stunning sight! Once in the cinema on the upper floor, everybody had to stand up and we were treated to the incredible view of an almost sold out room full of people dressed in their very best.

Before the film started, there was an almost 60 minute interview between Nikki van der Zyl and Danny Morgenstern on stage with former Bondclub Germany manager Wolfgang Thürauf occasionaly acting as a translator.

It was very interesting and exciting to hear the life story of Nikki van der Zyl who not only famously dubbed Ursula Andress in the original english version of “Dr. No”, but also many other Bond Girls such as Eunice Gayson in “Dr. No”, Jane Seymour in “Live and let Die”, Mie Hama in “You only live Twice” or Corinne Clery in “Moonraker”. She also coached Bond villain Gert Fröbe on the set of the third James Bond thriller “Goldfinger” since he couldn´t speak English but was able to learn it very fast and efficient. Still, he was later also revoiced by Michael Collins whose voice is, at least, very close to Fröbe.

Nikki told the amusing story of Gert Fröbe asking her to take photos on the Fort Knox set just to get a shot together with director Guy Hamilton when he was not paying attention and she described Fröbe as a very charming and lovable character.

The problem with re-voicing the first ever Bond Girl Ursula Andress was not so much the strong Swiss-German accent or her deep and somewhat unsexy voice, but matching the lip movement since Andress constantly put emphasis of words on wrong syllables. Just to give you a clear picture of how much work Nikki put into “Dr. No”: she voiced every female part in the film, except for Lois Maxwell playing Miss Moneypenny and one Chinese girl.
When asked, only 5 people in the audience knew, that Nikki had been providing voice-overs in 10 James Bond Films – an amazing contribution for which she never received the acclaim she deserves. Nikki was involved in more Bond films than any other actress and for providing the sexy voice of Honey Ryder in “Dr. No”, earning 25 Pounds for one session and since it only took Nikki one or two sessions to revoice an entire film, she was frequently used and earned herself the nickname “One-Take Nikki”.

In Nikkis book, entitled “FOR YOUR EARS ONLY” and released in June 2013, there are many more exciting stories like Bond producers Harry Saltzman and Albert R. Brocolli almost ending up in court over Ursula Andress real voice or revoicing Anita Ekberg without fellow film partner Bob Hope realizing it.

But the book doesn´t just concentrate on Bond alone, it provides many facettes and insights into the life of a multi-talented actress who fled Nazi Germany to start a new life in England, how she fought through traumatic years to stop her children being taken away from her, assisting the High Court as a barrister in the famous Baader-Meinhof terrorist case or having regular access to No. 10 Downing street as a lobby correspondent.

After the screening of “From Russia with Love”, Nikki and Danny were happy to sign copies of their books and after having a lovely chat with Nikki and her husband George, I just couldn´t resist buying my very own limited collectors edition of “For your Ears only” – I got No. 80 of 250 and it was the last available copy yesterday night.

It was an absolute pleasure talking to Nikki about Bond, her hometown London and my hometown Braunschweig as well as about her various other talents like singing, writing poems and painting. I learned, that an exhibition of Nikkis paintings will open in Berlin on November 10th where I will definitely attend. How could I resist a personal invitation by lovely Nikki?
Details on the exhibition will follow here shortly so that anyone interested can join in as well. You should also check Nikkis official Homepage for further details.
After so much excitement, my best friend Sarah – on her first night in the fantastic world of Bond Fans but exquisitely dressed complete with a 60´s hairstyle – and me treated ourselves to a complimentary Wodka Martini as well as catching up with fellow Bond Fans, meeting all of them for the very first time.

Danny Morgenstern had promised a lingerie show with original 50´s / 60´s fashion and although it was (understandably) crowded in front of the catwalk, I was able to take a few snaps.

After the show, the catwalk was removed quickly to make room for a dancefloor on which many guests let themselves go in a perfectly casual athmosphere while the clock was going towards midnight.

This 50 anniversary event was another great and enjoyable milestone of Danny Morgensterns admirable drive to create unforgettable moments for us to dive even deeper into the unique James Bond film history and I am very much looking forward to September 2014 where he will surely surprise Braunschweig yet again with “Goldfinger”.
At this point, a big THANK YOU for that wonderful evening yesterday!
